Using 2FA Backup Codes

Using 2FA Backup Codes

Backup codes are your safety net when you can't access your authenticator app.

What They Are

A set of one-time-use codes generated when you enable 2FA. Each code works once, then is consumed.

When to Use Them

  • You lost or replaced your phone
  • Your authenticator app was deleted or reset
  • You're temporarily without your usual device

How to Use

  1. At the 2FA prompt, click Use a backup code
  2. Enter one unused code
  3. You're signed in — that code is now spent

Regenerating Codes

If you run low or suspect your codes leaked:

  1. Go to Settings → Security → Backup Codes
  2. Click Regenerate
  3. The old set is invalidated immediately; save the new set

Storage Tips

  • Save them in a password manager, not in plain text on your desktop
  • Print a copy and keep it somewhere physically secure
  • Never share backup codes — anyone with them can bypass 2FA
