Using 2FA Backup Codes
Using 2FA Backup Codes
Backup codes are your safety net when you can't access your authenticator app.
What They Are
A set of one-time-use codes generated when you enable 2FA. Each code works once, then is consumed.
When to Use Them
- You lost or replaced your phone
- Your authenticator app was deleted or reset
- You're temporarily without your usual device
How to Use
- At the 2FA prompt, click Use a backup code
- Enter one unused code
- You're signed in — that code is now spent
Regenerating Codes
If you run low or suspect your codes leaked:
- Go to Settings → Security → Backup Codes
- Click Regenerate
- The old set is invalidated immediately; save the new set
Storage Tips
- Save them in a password manager, not in plain text on your desktop
- Print a copy and keep it somewhere physically secure
- Never share backup codes — anyone with them can bypass 2FA
