Managing 2FA Backup Codes
Managing 2FA Backup Codes
Backup codes are emergency one-time passwords you can use when you cannot access your authenticator app (e.g., lost phone, app reinstalled).
What Are Backup Codes?
- You receive 10 backup codes when you first enable 2FA
- Each code is an 8-character alphanumeric string (format: XXXX-XXXX)
- Each code can only be used once
- Codes are case-insensitive
Using a Backup Code
- On the 2FA verification screen during login, enter a backup code instead of the 6-digit authenticator code
- The code will be marked as used and cannot be reused
Regenerating Backup Codes
If you have used most of your backup codes or suspect they have been compromised:
- Go to Account Settings > Security
- Click Regenerate Backup Codes
- Enter your password to confirm
- New codes will be generated — all old codes are invalidated
Storing Backup Codes Safely
- Print them and store in a secure location
- Save them in a password manager
- Do NOT store them in plain text on your computer or email
- Do NOT share them with anyone
